Choosing Your Wedding Jewellery

Category : Guest Posts, Wedding Jewellery

After buying a dress, I suppose the next step is accessories. Thankfully we have professionals like  Claire Ogden (of Claire Ogden Designs) on hand with some suggestions to help.

“As we all know weddings can be quite an expense and therefore it is worth looking around and into all the alternative options before deciding on what you want.

Try a scrap book of different styles and themes before you commit to anything and have an open mind before you do go shopping.

  1. DECIDE ON YOUR THEME – this covers the look you are trying to achieve, colours,   materials and styles.
  2. DECIDE YOUR STYLE – Decide if you want unique, contemporary, vintage, modern or traditional. If you are looking for a more individual look it may be better selecting a bespoke package tailored for your exact specifications.
  3. SET YOUR PRICE – Agree a budget and how many items you would like. It may be better to have one extravagant purchase than lots of little ones.

Even with these questions answered, once you see some designs and pieces which are available you may change your mind – I have a lot of brides who want to go for Bridal Hair Combs until they try on a Tiara!

When you have decided on colours it is then best to see which style of jewellery will work with your chosen dress, below are a few examples to ensure you get the most out of your jewellery.

Justin Alexander Couture BridalVictoriana

This dress would look simply stunning with a crystal and pearl necklace, worn very high and incorporating golden/champagne tones or even a floral appliqué. This would be set with a gorgeous cuff bracelet in a matching theme. The earrings only need to be delicate and I would suggest a small set tiara or bridal comb.

The dress speaks volumes and you wouldn’t want to complicate the detail.

Birnbaum & BullockWillow

With such a statement neckline, for this dress I would suggest simple stud earrings or very small chandeliers. Lots of cream pearls and crystals. Make the statement here with a lush tiara or bridal hair comb!

Birnbaum & BullockFairytale Tiara

I suggest a gorgeous high tiara for this look, again in crystal with a matching cuff bracelet and elaborate earrings.

As an alternative look I would suggest incorporating lace into the design, chiffon and voiles, matched with Swarovski Crystals and embellished with ‘hot fix’ crystals direct to the material for a fairytale/whimsical look.

Birnbaum & Bullock Wedding DressBridal Hair Comb

This dress is beautifully created to catch the eye with all the gorgeous appliqué. For this look I would suggest a rather wide cuff bangle, made in the same style as a tiara with lots of detail and texture, simple stud earrings and a bridal comb to sit in a side up-do hairstyle using lots of floral detailing to compliment the dress.”

Wedding Dress Shopping? Bridal Trends for 2011

1

Category : Guest Posts, Wedding Dress

I’m not really a follower of fashion, although I work in the retail industry so it does pay to know what is in fashion!

Thankfully when it comes to wedding dress shopping, the bridal shops are extremely good at keeping us informed about the changing fashions. Liz Wootton, Director at Aliya Rose, a bridal boutique in Cupar, Fife has kindly written some words on what she sees as the main trends for 2011.

Over to you Liz;

This is the time of year that bridal retailers are starting to think about the direction their collections will take for the coming year.  Of course, the designers’ new collections are still top secret at this point, and we won’t know for several more weeks what they have up their sleeves.  But here are my predictions for 2011…….

Strapless is still big.  But straps are back, and at Aliya Rose we’ve seen a big increase in the numbers of brides asking for straps on their dress. Many designers like to offer clever detachable options, to give girls more choice for the neckline, and since asymmetry has caused a stir this year, I’ll not be surprised to see more asymmetric straps and one shoulder designs in 2011.  Ella 5437, for example, has had huge attention so far this year.

Is there a move away from full length?  Well, whilst the vast majority of girls we see do prefer to opt for the full length gown with train, I wouldn’t be surprised to see some designers popping in a handful of full skirted ballerina or tea length numbers in their collections.  We’ve certainly had requests ourselves for dresses along these lines.  And let’s face it, if you want to show off a fabulous pair of shoes, this is the way to do it!

So what of the full skirted fairytale dress?  Well, this is far from dead.  But I think we’ll see more in the Grace Kelly vein next year – one of the big stories for us is a gorgeous tulle number from Benjamin Roberts (2058A), which combines the fairytale with an air of elegant sophistication.  Gorgeous.

Vintage styling is something you can expect to see more of as well.  And the 1930s slinky shape isn’t for everyone (most of us prefer the idea of the structured corsetry in our gowns to give our bodies that little helping hand!), so instead I think we’ll see vintage style fabrics incorporated into the more structured shapes, or simple gowns that will combine beautifully with the opulent vintage style asymmetric headdresses.

But a bride who stays trued to what she feels great in NEVER goes out of fashion – you don’t have to be a slave to the latest trend on your wedding day, but you do need to feel fantastic, because that’s what gives you the wow factor!

Thanks Liz!

Cash is king as a wedding gift

Category : Guest Posts

After my recent post on Wedding Gift lists, the lovely Gillian over at Starweds was keen to share what prompted her to start up her business, a website that provides couples with a sophisticated way to ask for money as wedding gift!

And so, it’s over to you Gillian.

In the 1980’s it was almost unheard of to ask for money as wedding gift but by the 90′s people were starting to come round to the idea and cash became the second most sought after wedding gift, with kitchen and home-wares taking the number one spot.

gift-box

However, it seems that the days of receiving gravy boats, sugar bowls and milk jugs as wedding gifts are now well and truly numbered.  Wedding Magazine recently reported that 45% of couples are now asking for money as a wedding gift.

Currently in the United Kingdom, more than three quarters of couples live together before marriage.  In addition, the average age of those buying their first home is 28.

If we look at these figures against the average age of couples preparing for marriage which is 29.6 years (30.7 for men and 28.5 for women), it becomes understandable why most newlyweds will no longer have the need for toasters, bed linen and vacuum cleaners.

This is exacerbated by the fact that many couples will have had their own houses before moving in together and will end up with two sets of everything.

Historically in Britain, men and women would not live together until after they were married, so it made good sense to buy them home-ware goods.
pots and pans
As we have seen, times have changed and it is unlikely that newlyweds in modern day Britain will be able to muster the same enthusiasm for a set of pots and pans or a 12-piece dinner set than a newly married couple back in the 80′s.

In this day and age, it is easy to see why money has overtaken old favourites such as kitchen equipment and towel bales as the most favourable wedding gift.  It is important to note, though, that this isn’t by any means a new phenomenon.  In fact, only 20 years ago, we were starting to see that money was creeping to the top of the wedding gift list.

Cash is most certainly king for wedding gifts nowadays and this trend definitely looks set to continue.

Fabulously 50′s Style Wedding

An amateur photographer myself, I love looking through photos. And I mean love it. So when I came across the wonderfully talented Matt Foden on Twitter, I was delighted not only to come across his blog – but thrilled that he wanted featured on mine!

Matt and his wife Brenda recently covered a 50′s style wedding – and I would like to say a big thank you for sharing it with me! Here is what they had to say about Charlie and Ant’s wedding;

“Charlie and Ant went for a really relaxed feel for their wedding day, mixed with a vintage/1950′s theme. The setting was Charlie’s parental home, a beautiful cottage set in the Kent countryside. The 50′s theme was present throughout.  The bride wore a 1950′s style prom dress with a green tulle underskirt, a net veil and a simple, yet elegant pearl necklace. Guests were encouraged to go and put on their own songs on the jukebox – a lovely and unusual wedding decoration! As photographers we find the 50′s vintage theme really inspiring and find it adds a greater feeling of romance to the day; we hope you enjoy the images as much as we enjoyed shooting this lovely couple!”

A fabulously 50′s inspired wedding indeed!

Blasting the Preconceptions out of the Confetti!

Category : Guest Posts, Wedding Planning

A couple of weeks back, Alison from Plans and Presents and I got talking about Wedding Planners and why some brides are not so keen to use one. A bride to be myself, I agreed with a lot of the girls and never even considered using a wedding planner for fear of losing control over my wedding day (did I say MY? I meant OUR wedding day!). However, as it turns out, that isn’t what they do after all.

Below Alison lets us in on what her role, as a wedding planner, is truly about.

“I have been thinking about this for a while, and after speaking to other Wedding Planners, and Brides to be on Wedding Forums and Social Media, I would like to share my thoughts, or rather the thoughts of many on Hiring a Wedding and Event Planner.

Sometimes people just see the word’s “Wedding Planner” and there is an automatic “Eeek!”. There is a massive preconception that a wedding planner will take over, or be really expensive.

This in part is down to the media and film.

The Wedding Planner

If you watch movies such as the “Wedding Planner”, or “Bride Wars”, a planner is portrayed as this glamorised (perhaps overbearing psycho) add to the image that the press portrays in which only the well off can afford wedding planners and you have, well an image that isn’t really true. The majority of us assist with weddings and events for everyday people.

From a questionnaire I recently did on this subject, I got the following responses on why brides weren’t keen to use a wedding planner;

  • to retain “ownership” of the day
  • being a “control freak” and wanting to keep that control
  • too expensive
  • our venue has a co-coordinator/planner”

Bride pulling her hair.

And so, to squash these ‘rumours’, Alison would like to set the record straight;

“The role of a wedding planner is to help you get the day you want. Ownership of your wedding is never lost, it will ALWAYS be your day, I am just there to help you achieve what you have dreamed of and make sure you know what you expect”

A planner’s job is to get what YOU want, within YOUR budget, and with as little stress to you as possible, and we do this by working “with you”.

It is sometimes seen that a planner is an all or nothing option, while the reality is a Planner/Co-coordinator can help you with as much or as little as you need.

A planner will use their connections in the industry to help you make cost savings and will try to work in their fee within your budget too. The service is definitely not for big budget weddings only.

wedding reception

A planner is especially beneficial to those that have busy careers, are juggling family life, or don’t live in the location where they wish to marry.

In essence your planner is your project manager and is on call 24/7.

A planner will source the very best suppliers to fit in with your budget or any specific requests.

From a venue co-ordinator point of view, yes, they will take care of all venue related aspects, but if the cars break down or the florist gets sick then the venue isn’t responsible, that’s down to you!”

At the end of the day, it’s a personal choice for someone to decide if they want or need assistance to help plan their wedding day, and it is your choice to make. I suppose it’s useful to know that there are wedding planners out there like Alison who do just want to help you make your day.
