DIY Wedding Invitations made easy?

Category : Wedding Stationery

A while back I showed you the invitation my friend and I made for her wedding. We got all the card and embellishments, assembled them and that was that. Simple and stunning (and rather cheap too!).

So why, pray tell, is it that our invitations are taking so darn long to pull together. I’ll tell you exactly why, my other half. Who knew he was going to be so involved in the details (yay? more like ARGH!).

  • Firstly, he wanted a spiderman/comic like invitation. I said no. Not because I don’t like the idea, but it really wouldn’t go with anything else we have planned and it also meant I had no part in it.
  • Secondly, he wanted to draw a picture of us. And he did. Problem was, I didn’t like the picture, in my eyes, it simply didn’t look like me.
  • And then, well then he said he wanted to print it at his work, whilst I wanted letterpress. The type of printing his company don’t do.

I’m sure by now you get the picture. We have MAJOR artistic differences.

After a lot of discussions (well, arguments) we have finally decided on our invitations. Purple pocketfolds, a bit of his design work and some cutting and mounting required by me. The art of compromise.

Hints & Tips on Handmade Wedding Stationery

Category : Wedding Stationery

With so many different companies offering handmade stationery, it can be a difficult task wading through to find the right one – and once you do, how long should you give them to get your wedding stationery order complete?

Nikki from knots and kisses gives us some hints and tips on how to go about it!

“Many planning websites have different guidelines on when and how to order your wedding stationery. Here’s just a few tips to help you along;

1. Start thinking about the design and theme of your invitations and reception stationery as soon as possible. Apart from booking the venue its one of the first things you will have to do – especially if sending save the dates out!

2. If you can, make sure you order your stationery well in advance. Ideally you need to send out your stationery 6 weeks to 3 months prior to the wedding … longer for overseas weddings. So start the consultation and booking process at least 2 months prior to that. This ensures that you give your stationer plenty of time to hand make your stationery.

3. Many people make the mistake of ordering one invitation per person. Remember families and couples only need one invitation!

4. Orders of Service can also often be shared between 2 people. If you are looking to save money, budget for one per couple.

5. Remember to order a couple of extra blank invitations, even if you are ordering stationery with pre-printed guest names, just in case any of your original guest list can’t come and you want to send an invitation to someone else!

6.And one last pointer … many handmade stationery companies can only take so many orders every month to ensure the highest quality stationery. If you have a particular range of stationery or supplier in mind book early!”

Your Wedding Stationery by Cards by Sophie

Category : Sponsors, Wedding Stationery

As wedding stationery is my passion, I thought I’d give you a few tips on how to choose yours! Your weddings stationery sets the scene for your big day and gives guests an idea of what your special day will be like.

Personally, I wouldn’t worry about picking a theme for save the date cards – these can get sent out as much as a year in advance, so you may not even have chosen a theme yet. If not, choose something you like the look of – it really is that simple!

For some couples, their invitations help set the tone of their wedding day, and in deciding, may help you decide on flowers and other accessories. To help you decide, think about all the things you love, a favourite colour, your ideal décor, the place you are getting married, whether you want something traditional or modern.

We offer 14 designs through our website at Cards by Sophie, and we welcome bespoke orders too. If there is something you’ve found or a particular item that has become your inspiration for your wedding, let us know. We love a challenge and are keen to work with you to ensure the stationery is exactly as you envisaged.

So, once you have decided, what do you order and when?

Here’s our handy guide:

  1. Order Save the Date cards once you have fixed your wedding date: as a general guide at least 9 months to a year before your wedding. Send these out as far in advance as possible if your wedding is at the height of summer or mid-week.
  2. Order Invitations, RSVPs and pocketfolds. Aim to be sending out invitations at least 2 months prior to your wedding. Remember to allow enough time for your stationer to make all your items (we ask for 4-6 weeks). Once you’ve found a design, choose a colour theme. Your stationer will then send out a proof so that you can check all the details are correct.
  3. Order on the day items. These can be ordered much nearer to the actual wedding and include anything that will be used on the big day itself! We know how long it takes sometimes to finalise things such as details with the vicar, caterer or even your final guest list, but as a general guide we usually request these be finalised around 4-8 weeks before the wedding.
  4. Order favour boxes and thank you cards. Many clients purchase these at the same time as the invitations – however they can be left until nearer the time!  Thank you cards and favour boxes can be tailored to match the rest of your stationery.

The business was started after planning her own wedding and struggling to find modern wedding stationery at a reasonable price. “When I was choosing my wedding stationery, I found it so difficult to find something that was just as I wanted. I wanted to be able to personalise it, change the colours and get the design just right for me. So I decided to create a collection that is simple, stylish, contemporary and affordable… just what you’re looking for.”

Offering her stationery in a range of prices and sizes, Sophie has something on offer for every style and budget. Stationery available includes Save the Date cards, Invitations, Menus, Order of Service, Place Cards, Table Plans, Favour boxes and much more.

Cards by Sophie offers a nationwide service, one sample free of charge, no minimum order and not forgetting a fantastic 10% discount on orders over £250!
