Lyn & Paul, Hudson River Boat, New York City
When it comes to New York, I am obsessed, everything is on a much grander scale – and seems very cool and this wedding is no exception to that rule!
Nikki McLeod, shares with us the wedding of a Scottish couple, getting married on a Hudson River cruise ship (in NYC of course!). Moody skies, that infamous backdrop and some Tiffany goodies – who can resist?
Nikki tell us about the couple’s day and how they chose her as their photographer;
” I first met Lyn at Emma’s wedding that I photographed several years ago. Lyn was Emma’s bridesmaid and at the wedding, she came to me and said “When I get married…. I’m not engaged yet… but when I get married, you’re photographing the wedding!” Fortunately the guy she was with was Paul, the guy she was to marry and she did book me for her August wedding in Edinburgh.
Then the phone call came that every photographer dreads – “Sorry Nikki, we’ve cancelled the wedding; we’ve decided just to get married in New York on our honeymoon”. ”I do travel……” says I; three hours later, the package was changed dramatically, my flights and accommodation were booked – I was going to New York to shoot a wedding!
The small wedding party included Emma and her husband Colin, their best friends and the parents of the bride and groom and the wedding was to be held on the World Yacht, a fantastic cruise ship that goes around Manhattan. The ceremony was to held on the ship’s deck before the sailing around Manhattan at sunset. I joined the girls at the Blow Bar for hair and make up in the morning before the crazy yellow cab ride through Manhattan to the Pier.
Unfortunately the weather didn’t play ball and the rain fell. The ceremony had to be moved inside the ship but was no more moving than it would have been outside. An excellent meal followed with photos being taken as we passed under the Brooklyn Bridge and around the Statue of Liberty. The highlight for me was lying in the middle of Times Square, taking photos of the bride whizzing her dress around her, while the world looked on!
As the wedding itself was on the ship, we made arrangements to have a “Back Again” post wedding session the next day; a bride in a beautiful dress and a handsome groom in his kilt made for crowd stopping scenes around Central Park, FAO Schwarz the toy shop, outside Tiffanys, Grand Central Station, and ending up in the Meatpacking District at a gorgeous little cupcake shop that had a birdcage you could sit in!
All too soon it was straight back onto the flight home for me for another wedding in Scotland! It was one crazy trip but I was very honoured to be a part of it and very honoured that a client booked me having seen me work at another wedding.
