  • First on the list is AliBaliJewellery for this lovely Silver Fingerprint Necklace. Simple yet very charming, this would be an ideal gift for a mothers day gift or christmas present (hint hint to anyone looking for ideas!!)

  • Eco friendly or a long lasting memory of your wedding invitations or save the dates? Either way, these tea towel come invitations are pretty darn cool.

  • It may not be the traditional fresh flower corsage one would expect, but this sea shell boutonniere from HairBowsWonderWorld is fantastic.

Is Entertainment required at a Wedding?

2

Category : Wedding Entertainment

I’ve posed this question to a few brides to be – and those that I speak to don’t appear to be planning anything out of the ordinary. However I ‘ve heard of a fair few couples organising entertainment for their wedding day – and I am not talking about the hiring of a wedding band or dj!

Call me old fashioned (why thank you!), but I thought the bride and groom were the entertainment for the day? I assumed, perhaps naively, that everyone was there to see us getting married, have a nice dinner, some drinks and set about dancing the night away.

So what other options are there? Apparently quite a few!

  • Magicians – and not just any magicians, but close up tricks that are guatenteed to dazzle;
  • magicians

  • Caricaturists – a piece of art, a cartoonist or illustrator who will draw your guests;
  • Singing Waiters – who blend into the background, and randomly begin singing
  • singing waiter

  • Elvis/Sinatra Impersonators, no explanation required I assume
  • Bouncy castles, for adults;
  • Casino tables
  • casino table hire

I’m not too sure about all of this – is it normal nowadays to provide additional entertainment? What do you think?

Karen & Craig – Culcreuch Castle, Fintry

Category : Real Weddings

When I came across Karen on the SWD wedding forum, she was showing off her fabulous creations for her wedding. Hours upon hours of her spare time spent on attaching swarovski crystals to the heels of her shoes or to the tiaras of both herself and her girls. This was going to be a wedding with personality.

After being together for 15 years and engaged for 9 of those, Karen and Craig finally decided to book their wedding in June this year.

So why did the couple chose Culcreuch Castle?

Initial planning began back in 2003 where I gathered every brochure I could get my hands on of castle venues. Fast forward to 2009 where with a mortgage and a child, there was no way the castle venue was going to happen…..until I remembered Culcreuch. We called them right there and then to book a viewing, fell in love with the place and booked for the only Saturday they had left in June 2010!

Our whole entire day was just fabulous but I must admit I was looking forward to our first dance as we had taken lessons. With all the comments we got afterwards and still to this day, I think we managed to pull it off!

I absolutely loved all the planning from start to finish but because I wanted to do try doing mostly everything myself, I may have put a bit more stress and pressure on than required. Saying that however, it’s the way I am. I love having 17 different projects on the go at once!

I made my own and all my girls tiaras, spent weeks hot fixing swarovski crystals to the heels of my shoes, made all the bouquets, reception decor, buttonholes, all my stationery (took a full 2 weeks alone just to do the invites) and welcome baskets for all my guests that stayed at the castle. I was desperate to do my own cupcakes but thought it would be too much so I made the cake topper instead!

Craig and I planned everything together and with a little help from mum and my girls, we got ribbons tied around favours, assembled order of the days and added a squillion diamontes to embellish various pieces of stationery. Craig was just amazing throughout as he is the spreadsheet king and had every single receipt recorded and every task timed. He did the logistics, I did the designing.

It’s strange, being together for 15 years, we already felt married in a way. I guess now that it’s all official, I can finally call myself a wife and a Mrs. I have a husband now, not a ‘partner’. A proper family, in the traditional sense. It does feel different but I can’t really explain it. My 6 year old daughter thinks it’s hilarious – but it gives me goosebumps every time I think ‘my name is Mrs Bruce’

Bet you loved reading that as much as I did – I do love a wedding where the bride and groom stamp their identity by doing things themselves!

Well done you guys – and Congratulations again Mr and Mrs Bruce!

Wedding Dress Shopping? Bridal Trends for 2011

1

Category : Guest Posts, Wedding Dress

I’m not really a follower of fashion, although I work in the retail industry so it does pay to know what is in fashion!

Thankfully when it comes to wedding dress shopping, the bridal shops are extremely good at keeping us informed about the changing fashions. Liz Wootton, Director at Aliya Rose, a bridal boutique in Cupar, Fife has kindly written some words on what she sees as the main trends for 2011.

Over to you Liz;

This is the time of year that bridal retailers are starting to think about the direction their collections will take for the coming year.  Of course, the designers’ new collections are still top secret at this point, and we won’t know for several more weeks what they have up their sleeves.  But here are my predictions for 2011…….

Strapless is still big.  But straps are back, and at Aliya Rose we’ve seen a big increase in the numbers of brides asking for straps on their dress. Many designers like to offer clever detachable options, to give girls more choice for the neckline, and since asymmetry has caused a stir this year, I’ll not be surprised to see more asymmetric straps and one shoulder designs in 2011.  Ella 5437, for example, has had huge attention so far this year.

Is there a move away from full length?  Well, whilst the vast majority of girls we see do prefer to opt for the full length gown with train, I wouldn’t be surprised to see some designers popping in a handful of full skirted ballerina or tea length numbers in their collections.  We’ve certainly had requests ourselves for dresses along these lines.  And let’s face it, if you want to show off a fabulous pair of shoes, this is the way to do it!

So what of the full skirted fairytale dress?  Well, this is far from dead.  But I think we’ll see more in the Grace Kelly vein next year – one of the big stories for us is a gorgeous tulle number from Benjamin Roberts (2058A), which combines the fairytale with an air of elegant sophistication.  Gorgeous.

Vintage styling is something you can expect to see more of as well.  And the 1930s slinky shape isn’t for everyone (most of us prefer the idea of the structured corsetry in our gowns to give our bodies that little helping hand!), so instead I think we’ll see vintage style fabrics incorporated into the more structured shapes, or simple gowns that will combine beautifully with the opulent vintage style asymmetric headdresses.

But a bride who stays trued to what she feels great in NEVER goes out of fashion – you don’t have to be a slave to the latest trend on your wedding day, but you do need to feel fantastic, because that’s what gives you the wow factor!

Thanks Liz!

Wedding Cakes – the choice is endless!

Category : Wedding Cakes

It amazes me the questions people ask when you book that big day. I mean, you book the venue, it’s a massive decision, but you make it. And then, well then comes the barrage of questions surrounding tiny (or maybe not so tiny) details.

Have you got a dress? Erm, no we just booked the venue.
Will Chris wear a kilt? Erm, probably, but we only just booked the venue.
Are you going to invite great aunt suzie from Canada? Erm, yeah sure.
What colour scheme are you going for? A colour. Check.

And so, the list goes on. Different strokes for different folks, but apparently I should know the answers to all!

Luckily enough – I know the answer to the wedding cake. Cupcakes by the Scrumptious Baker. Done. Perfect (hopefully!). I knew that one straight away, after we tasted some of Emma’s cupcakes the decision was made. Easy!

But did you know – there is a MASSIVE choice when it comes to wedding cakes. I didnt. I thought it was fruit or sponge. White icing. Flowers or ribbon.

Nowadays in this crazy old world of personalisation – you can have what you want. It may not be traditional, but it can certainly be you!

Here are a few of my favourite options;

  • A cheese wedding cake. Some lovely cheese and crackers with a nice glass of wine, delightful!
  • cheese wedding cake

  • Indulge in yourself with a lifesize wedding cake. It’s like looking in the mirror;
  • lifesize wedding cake

  • A fun novelty cake;
  • Liquoise All Sorts

  • Macaroons anyone?
  • macaroon wedding cake

  • The aforementioned, Cupcake tower;
  • wedding cupcake tower

    They all look yummy! Which one will you chose?

    As always, if there are any I have missed, then please let me know and I will add them to my list.

    And so, it’s time to get ready and go for some cake, I mean lunch.
